Blue Margarita Cocktail Recipe

Blue Margarita Cocktail is simple to make, so delicious to drink, and so pretty to look at.  This Blue Margarita is also called a Moonlight Margarita or an Electric Margarita, but they are all essentially the same.  This drink is a simple twist on the classic margarita cocktail.  It is perfect served on the rocks or as a frozen drink, plus this margarita recipe can also be made by the glass or by the pitcher.  This is one super drink that will have everyone asking for more.

The blue color comes from the Blue Curacao, a liqueur flavored with the dried peel of the Laraha Citrus fruit, grown on the island of Curaçao. The Laraha Citrus is similar to the Valencia orange, but due to the arid climate of the island, the fruit is not sweet, but has a bitter taste.

This is a great margarita to celebrate the 4th of July with its patriotic blue tones.

  • 1 teaspoon coarse salt
  • 4 ounces Tequila*
  • 2 ounces Triple Sec
  • 2 ounces lime juice, fresh-squeezed
  • 2 ounces blue Curacaco liqueur
  • 2 teaspoons superfine sugar

  1. Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice.

  2. Place Tequilla, Triple Sec, lime juice, blue Curacaco, and sugar in the shaker; shake hard for 30 seconds.

  3. Serve in Margarita Glasses with coarse salt or Margarita Salt on the rims of the glasses.  Strain the Blue Margarita into the glasses.  Garnish each with a slice of star fruit or a lime wedge.

  4. NOTE:  To create a salt-rimmed glass, take a lemon or lime wedge and rub the drinking surface of the glass so it is barely moist.  Dip the edge of the glass into coarse or Kosher salt.

  5. Makes 2 serving.

Recipe Notes

* If possible, use 100% agave tequila.  The better your tequila, the better the taste of your drink.

I prefer margaritas this way (without any extra sweetener) the triple sec or blue curacao is plenty sweet for me. These look like fun!

I love that deep blue color, it’s beautiful! Your suggestion to use pink salt is great, that would look neat.
