Favorite French Toast Recipe

This is my favorite French Toast recipe to serve my family.  When I make French Toast, it is usually the only dish we want to eat at that meal.  Because of this, I adapted my French Toast recipe to make sure everyone is getting their protein for the meal.  Perfect French toast is always a joy to behold for breakfast and a great way to start off you and your family’s day.

Servings: 4 slices French Toast
Ingredients
  • 4 eggs
  • 4 tablespoons milk
  • Several drops pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 4 slices bread with crusts*
  • Butter for cooking
  • Powdered sugar (confectioners' sugar)
  • Maple syrup, honey, and/or jam (for topping
Orange French Toast (Variation):
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest, grated
  • Juice of 1/2 orange
  • Dash ground cinnamon
  • 4 slices bread with crusts*
  • Butter for cooking
  • Powdered sugar (confectioners' sugar)
  • Maple syrup, honey, and/or jam (for topping)
Instructions
  1. In 13- x 9-inch baking pan or dish, combine the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and cinnamon; beat with a fork until well mixed.

  2. Layer the bread slices into the egg mixture and let soak about 5 minutes or until most of egg mixture is absorbed, turning once.

  3. On a heavy skillet (I like to use my cast iron griddle) with an generous amount of hot melted butter, place prepared bread in a single layer and cook until the bread is golden brown and crusted on the bottom, about 2 minutes.  Turn with bread and cook until the second side is golden, about 1 to 1 1/2 minutes.

  4. Place on individual serving plates, and sprinkle each slice of French Toast with powdered sugar.  Serve hot with either maple syrup, honey, sugar, and/or jam.

  5. NOTE:  If making a large batch of French Toast, preheat the oven to 200 degrees F.  Transfer the French toast from the skillet to a baking sheet.  Cover lightly with aluminum foil and place in the oven to keep warm while you cook the other slices.

  6. Makes 4 slices French Toast.

Recipe Notes

* I like to use breads with multi-grains, raisins, and/or nuts in them.  It makes the French Toast more nutritional and very tasty.  Fresh bread will absorb batter more quickly than stale bread.  In other words, you can use any type of bread you choose.
