What began as five wineries in 1970 in the North Willamette Valley has blossomed into more than 250 wineries today, ranking second behind California. In Oregon's northwest Willamette Valley, cool-climate grape varieties are grown which include Pinot Gris, Riesling, Chardonnay, and especially Pinot Noir. This region is where the majority of the state's wine grapes are grown. Sheltered by the Cascade Mountains to the east, Oregon's Cascade Mountain Range to the west, and on the same latitude as France's famed Burgundy region, the Willamette Valley has gained international recognition as a world-class growing district, especially for cool-climate varieties like Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris.
