Question:

Hello!  I have a recipe for Oriental Orzo Salad, and it calls for Tahini.  I'm not sure what it is or where to look for it.  Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated! Thanks. - Jennifer G (5/30/02)

Answer:

Tahini is the equivalent of peanut butter, only it is made from 100% crushed sesame seeds. It can be used as a sandwich spread, or mixed with a variety of other seasonings such as garlic and onion or cayenne pepper for a tasty dip or salad dressing. Tahini is a key ingredient in hummus, the traditional Middle Eastern chickpea spread. If you can't find Tahini in your grocery store, peanut butter can be substituted.
