Breakfast:

Review Date:  November 25, 2006

Neighborhood cafe located on Murray Road on the edge of the Murrayhill neighborhood. As my husband and I are always on the lookout for places to eat breakfast, we eagerly set out to enjoy breakfast. We don't have enough breakfast restaurants on the west side of Portland.

Buttermilk Biscuits and Gravy - Two sausage gravy with freshly made biscuits and breakfast potatoes. 1/2 order $4.75.

My husband, Don, had the biscuits and gravy, one of his favorite breakfasts. What a disappointment! The biscuits were very hard, not soft and fluffy as they should be, and they didn't use a milk gravy!

Eggs Benedict - Your choice of Canadian bacon of Applewood smoked bacon on an English muffin, two poached eggs with a citrus hollandaise sauce and breakfast potatoes. $9.00.

I didn't get what I ordered. Traditional Eggs Benedict comes with Canadian Bacon, but they used just regular ham in the dish. The eggs were COLD, as if the dish had been sitting around for awhile. The hash browns were a combination of sweet potatoes and regular potatoes - The combination didn't taste good. The fruit included on our plates was a small cup of canned fruit cocktail - Yuck!

There is something abut breakfast for me - don't mess around with my breakfast. Both of our breakfasts were big disappointments!

Review Date:  June 16, 2007

They had several empty tables in the restaurant, but they made us wait 10 to 15 minutes before seating us. In fact, the restaurant was not busy.

I tried ordering the Eggs Benedict again!  I was served the Canadian Bacon this time, but the eggs were again COLD!  The little cup of fruit was very small.

A couple of my dining companions ordered the French Toast, and they said it was good.  My husband ordered the Cobb Salad, and he enjoyed it very much.

The servers were very friendly, but the service was very slow. We had to ask for butter for the French Toast and Pancakes, and also the cream for the coffee.

Lunch:

Review Date:  January 17, 2007

With our friends, we decided to give their lunch menu a try. I wasn't real excited about doing this, because of our previous breakfast experience. But everyone ruled me out.

What my husband and I ordered:

Muffalata Panini - Genoa, finnochions & soppresotta salami with chopped, pickled vegetable and olive spread and smoked provolone. - $7.75.

This was excellent! I was really surprised. It was such a large sandwich that I had to take 1/2 of it home.

House Burger - A half-pound of seasoned certified angus beef with our burger sauce, lettuce, tomato and onions. $7.75.

My husband said this was a really good hamburger that he would definitely order again.

Comments From Readers:

Hello Linda. I am the Chef at Murrayhill Cafe. I first would like to apologize about your breakfast experience here. We are dedicated to bringing you nothing but a high quality dining experience. I would like to invite you back to our breakfast to give us another chance. I would like to clear up something's we do. Our gravy is made from milk, butter, flour, onions, sausage and seasonings. No water. We use a very expensive Canadian bacon which is a smoked pork loin. One of the best I have had. We only use ham on our Ham and Swiss Panini. Our fruit salad is cut fresh every morning and tossed in a mint infused simple syrup.  Most definitely not from a can. I was pleased to see you enjoyed our lunch. We make our bread by hand every morning. Can you find another cafe that does this? Again I extend an invitation for you to try us again. We have wonderful pasta dishes. Our pasta is fresh noodles only. We use only fresh Dungeness crab.  We have changed our biscuit recipe. Quality is our mandate and I appreciate your feed back. - Chef Justin Webb (1/21/07)

Response:  Since both my husband and I liked your lunches, I do plan on coming back and trying breakfast again. Thank you for your input.

A friend of mine emailed the other day and gave me a link to a website that he told me I should take a look at. It was a link to your "review" of the Murrayhill Cafe. I have been in the restaurant business about 5 years now and live close to the cafe and frequent it often. In my opinion there is no better place to get breakfast in Beaverton.  I was very surprised to hear about your comments in regards to the breakfast. I have had both of those items and thought they were great. I was curious about a couple of things though.  The first would be are you sure about the ingredients that you said they don't use in those dishes? The gravy, the fruit salad, etc...... If so, how do you know?  I would also like to know what your credentials are when it comes to food and restaurants.  Like I said I work in a restaurant, know food and think there food is great so I was just wondering if you were just giving your personal opinion of someone that likes to dine out on occasion (which it seems like). Or if you are giving a professional opinion from someone that has education in the culinary field. This email is not meant to be rude.  Being a chef, your review just struck me the wrong way and was hoping to understand more of your experience there!  - A. Response:  My review was based on the food served to me and my friends on the day I ate there. If you completely read the review, you would see that I went back for lunch and raised their rating.  I intend to try breakfast again, in the hope that it was just an off day! I never let anyone know I am there to review them, as I want the same service and food that others get. I only write about what actually happens when I am there. I write honest and accurate reviews.  I always go into a restaurant with a positive attitude. I, personally, want each restaurant to excel.
