Back in the 1970s, the original Roses on N.W. 23rd in Portland, was our favorite family place to eat. You usually had to stand in line to wait for a table. But the food was so good that it was worth it. The sandwiches were large and the cakes even larger.  The Rose's Restaurants that are now in the Portland area try to resemble the original restaurant, but it is hard to live up to a legend! Everything is smaller at these new restaurants.

The first thing you notice when entering this restaurant, is their dessert case.  The desserts look fantastic, but, unfortunately, Rose's doesn't make their own pastries any more. They are made by another bakery in Portland. The desserts are still good.

In the past, we have tried their grilled chicken breast Caesar salad and chopped salad, and we were disappointed. The Caesar was just so-so, and the chopped salad was not chopped up lettuce. When I asked for dressing on the side, it came with the some dressing on the side, but it was already tossed with dressing.

Dishes we ordered with comments:

Original Reuben Sandwich. $9.95

My daughter ordered this sandwich, as it is her favorite. She was happy with it. The Reuben sandwiches don't seem to be as big as I remember them (we used to be able to feed two people with one sandwich), but they taste just as good. I personally like their combo Reuben with corned beef and turkey. They also have a great BLT sandwich.

Sliced Nova
- Thinly sliced Nova Lox served on your choice of bagel with cream cheese, tomato, red onion and capers. $11.25

This is my favorite sandwich at Roses. I probably order it 80% of the time. The other times, I order their Original Reuben Sandwich.

Barbecued Beef Ribs - U.S.D.A. choice beef ribs slowly cooked until tender in our sweet and tangy barbecue sauce, served with a dressed baked potato and your choice of soup or dinner salad. $11.95

My husband and son-in-law order the ribs. They are both rib lovers and were in rib heaven.  They were very happy and said they taste good. The baked potato that came with the ribs was hard and not fluffy. It looked and tasted like it had been cooked in the microwave oven.

BBQ Brisket - Slowly braised tender beef brisket, smothered in our chef's BBQ sauce with sauteed onions. Served on a baguette with melted Swiss cheese. $9.75.

My husband order this, and he said it was very good.

Desserts:
(We like to share desserts)

Our group ordered a slice of the chocolate cake, tiramisu cake, and a éclair.  They were delicious!

Reviews from other diners:

My girlfriend and I stopped in there for a late lunch around 3 p.m. on a Saturday about a month ago. We were promptly seated at the table closest to the front door. We sat there, with our menus, for just over 5 minutes with no one greeting us once we were seated.  It was in the middle of the afternoon and there were maybe 5 or 6 couples there at the most. We reviewed the menu and the prices seemed a little high for sandwiches and after sitting there for a few more minutes of looking at the prices and obviously the horrible service we decided to leave.  No one said a word when we left.

I am sure we are not the only ones this has happened to but it was almost like there were just a group of teenagers working and no one was in charge.  Thanks for listening to me. - (4/27/07)
