This small cafe-style restaurant is a "hidden jewel" located in the small community of Scholls. A perfect place for lunch on your way to the wine country. This place is a favorite lunch place for my husband and me, and we eat here on a regular basis. The food is so good that I hesitated to let the "world" know about this cafe in fear of losing the small community flavor. As we live in the Scholls area, we are usually guaranteed to see someone we know every time we go there.

The building has an interesting and varied past. It was built in 1902 as the Lincoln Lodge of the Odd Fellows. The upper floor was used by the lodge and the lower floor became a store. The lower floor remained a store until the mid 1970s with various owners. In 1944, the building was bought by the Bunnell family. The Bunnells, along with their three daughters, were the first family to have living quarters in the store. The Bunnell sisters began their singing career in the Scholls community. Their singing career took them all the way to the Palace Theater in New York by 1950.

During the last 10 years, the building has held an antique business and the now present coffee shop/cafe. To read more history of the area and building, purchase the Scholls Ferry Tales by Margaret Putnam Hesse for sale at the store.

The South Store Cafe started out as a local coffee shop and advanced to a cafe offering a wonderful menu of sandwiches, homemade daily soups, fresh baked pastries, small breakfasts, and box lunches.

The homemade chocolate chip and snickerdoodle cookies are always a hit, along the other freshly baked pastries. The owner is the pastry chef and she turns out daily surprises of fresh baked pastries.

All this along with all your favorite espresso and coffee drinks. Also, they make old-fashioned milkshakes with real ice cream and whole milk!

The sandwiches are superb. All sandwiches are made with bread baked by the Portland Grand Central Bakery and house-roasted meats from Carlton Farms. Sandwiches are served with a choice of chips or seasonal fruit.
