Homemade Lime Gum Drops Recipe

Homemade Lime Gum Drops – I love gum drops!  Now that I have tested and developed this wonderful lemon gum drop recipe, I will never have to purchase them again.  I made these lime gum drops before Christmas and I was thrilled with the result as they were actually fun to make. They are versatile for any occasion.  If you can make jello, you can easily make this candy.  My family and I were delighted with the flavor and the texture of the gum drops.

I slightly adapted these Homemade Lime Gum Drops recipe after reviewing many other recipes on the internet.  Lime Gum Drops are the perfect treat to make for family and friends during the holidays.  You can make different flavors of gum drops by using different fruit juice and food coloring.  Use you imagination and be creative.  I have to warn you, these candies are very sweet and a delicious way to satisfy your sugar addiction.  This candy will definitely put a smile on the faces of adults and children.  Among all the candy sweets, gum drops seem to be a children’s favorites.

Homemade Lime Gum Drops Recipe:

Ingredients
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 1/3 cups apple sauce
  • 2 (3-ounce) boxes Lime Jell-O* 
  • 2 envelopes unflavored gelatin
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for finishing)
Instructions
  1. Spray a 11-inch x 17-inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.

  2. In a large saucepan, combine 2 cups granulated sugar, applesauce, Lime JELL-O, unflavored gelatin, and lemon juice; let stand for a 1 minute. Bring mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly.  Boil for 1 minute and then remove from heat.

  3. Pour into the prepared 11-inch x 7-inch baking dish.  Refrigerate for approximately 3 hours or until firm.

  4. Layer the 1/2 cup granulated sugar on the bottom of a cookie sheet.

  5. To cut gum drops:  After the mixture is firm, using a rubber spatula, loosen gelatin from sides of dish.  Invert onto the prepared cookie sheet that has a layer of granulated sugar on it.  Sprinkle sugar over the top of the gum drops.  Dip knife into hot water and cut into squares.  Save the remaining sugar for later.

  6. Let dry at room temperature at least 8 hours.

  7. After drying, roll the gum drops in the remaining sugar you have set aside.

  8. To store, place gumdrops in an air-tight container.
