Date Squares Recipe – Matrimonial Bars

Attention date lovers!  You’ll absolutely love these Date Square Cookies – I do!  These delicious Date Bars were originally known as Matrimonial Bars.  Sometime in history, they became known as date squares or date bars.

Date Squares Recipe - Matrimonial Bars Recipe:

Servings: 1 dozen bars
Ingredients
  • 1 cup dates, dried, pitted, and finely chopped with an oiled knife
  • 1 cup walnuts or pecans, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons flour (all-purpose)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup sugar (granulated)
  • 3 eggs, beaten
  • Powdered sugar (confectioners' sugar)
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.  Lightly butter a 9-inch square baking pan.

  2. In a large bowl, combine dates, walnuts, flour, baking powder, sugar, and eggs. Spread mixture onto bottom of prepared baking pan.

  3. Bake 35 minutes; remove from oven and let cool on a wire rack for 15 minutes.  Cut into squares.

  4. Toss warm squares, a few at a time, in the powdered sugar.  Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.  Sprinkle with more powdered sugar just before serving.

  5. Storage:  Date Squares keep, layered between sheets of wax paper or parchment paper, in an airtight container at room temperature for approximately 1 week.  These cookies also freeze well.
