Questions and Answers – How To Freeze Grapes

Question:

(1)  While watching the Food Network, Sara Moulton said something about freezing grapes.  Is that possible and how to do it?  Thanks – Unknown

(2)  I have an excess of grapes which will soon spoil if I don’t do something.  Since my husband and I are both on the Nutri-System diet, I cannot use them in cooking.  But we can each have 15 grapes as one serving of fruit.  Does freezing affect the taste of the grape?  Any help you can provide is very much appreciated. – Alice

Frozen Grapes – How To Freeze Grapes:

How To Freeze GrapesFreezing grapes is so simple and delicious, and they are fun to eat.  Makes a great, healthy snack on a hot day.  It is like eating a grape popsicle or a sorbet!  Grapes are low calorie, fat free, and a wonderful alternative for sweets when eating on the go.  Also makes a great poolside treat on a hot summer day.  If you have not yet tried frozen grapes, you must ASAP.

Be sure and purchase seedless grapes for freezing.  Red, black, and/or green grapes may be used (your choice).

Wash, dry, and de-stem grapes. I  have found that you can also freeze them in small clusters on the stems.

Place the grapes in a colander, and soak in cool water for a couple of minutes to wash away dirt, residue, and pesticides.  Then rinse under cool water for about thirty seconds, shaking the colander to release any trash or dirt.   After a thorough washing, leave the colander in the sink to let excess water drain.  Dry the grapes thoroughly by placing in a single layer on towels to dab dry.

Use your salad spinner for washing the grapes. You will still need to dry the grapes. This is so easy to do.

Place on a baking sheet lined with wax paper and freeze.  Once frozen, just place them in a freezer bag and place back in the freezer.  By freezing them in this way, the grapes will not clump together and will freeze more uniformly before storing in the freezer for a long period of time.  Some people will just dump the unfrozen grapes in a large freezer bag and skip this step.

No sugar is required because of the natural high sugar and acid level acts as a preservative.

Eat as a snack right from the freezer.  These grapes can be eaten frozen or thawed for a few minutes.

Frozen grapes can replace fresh grapes in every recipe as they retain their intense color and flavor and hold their shape when thawed.  When using frozen grapes for preserves, thaw in refrigerator just until crushable.

I actually found that if I mix the frozen grapes with Welch’s White Grape Peach Juice in a small glass, I have a wonderful dessert.  It kind of makes a slushy, and the grapes themselves taste great.  I will probably never eat another grape unless it is frozen. – Alice

I have some organic grapes which are not 100% ripe( some were harvested already) and I want to make grape juice .
Any suggestions? The grapes are not 100% sweet to make the wine which I intend to do( I have 125 lbs) but I have harvested only about 25 lbs so far and they are sweet.
    Thanks.

I would use your ripest grapes to press for grape juice, otherwise you will need to sweeten to your preference.

I froze some grapes and they got a white film on them. They were organic grown on my property. What would cause this?

Any moisture left on the grapes, will cause a frosty film on them.

Eat as a snack right from the freezer. Frozen grapes can be eaten frozen or thawed for a few minutes. Yes, they will get mushy if you don’t use or eat them immediately,
