Questions and Answers – Bon Appetit Seasoning Salt
Question:
I have a recipe calling for Bon Appetit Seasoning Salt , since the neighborhood store does not carry this, what can I substitute? Also what is this spice? We are making Coquille St. Jacques.
Answers:
Bon Appetit Seasoning Salt is a spice put out by McCormick Company. It is a very mild blend of Celery, Onion, Salt, and MSG. Its light color makes it ideal for chicken, fish, white sauces and vegetables, tossed salads, and baked potatoes.
Label Ingredient Information: Salt, Monosodium Glutamate (Flavor Enhancer), Celery Seed, and Onion.
Substitutions: Beau Appetit seasoning = equal parts onion powder and celery salt

I have not been able to find Bon Appetit and wonder when you will be bringing it back on the market. Old World Spices have Bon Appetit, but it contains Silicon Dioxide, a chemical which is toxic to me.

You can purchase Bon Appetit on Amazon. My mom used this for a recipe. She looked everywhere then found it on Amazon.

The McCormick website shows to use 1 Tablespoon Celery Salt, 1 Tablespoon Sugar and 1 teaspoon Onion powder. Not equal parts.

I have used Bon Appetit for years in a dill dip recipe from a former college room mate used for special occasions. Over the years I have learned MSG gives me horrendous headaches. I didn’t realize Bon Appetit has MSG. Will try sub for pot luck next week. Too bad I can’t send the rest of my bottle of Bon Appetit to one of you that want it so badly. I will be eliminating it from my dill dip recipe.

Like others before me, I can only hope that you will bring this spice back on the shelves. I have several recipes that will never be the same. It’s your fault that my recipes fall short of perfection.
